Dead Horse Solstice

The last light of the shortest day of the year, as seen from near Dead Horse State Park, Utah.

Walk with me...

Sorry about the cheesy TV show reference. Was actually a pretty cool show, for about half a season, and that's probably the nicest thing I've ever said about any show, save the venerable Flying Circus, of course. Anyhoo... that's was what came to my head working on this shot. Started out just as something to remind me of heat while its snowing outside. As you'd probably noticed, this is yet another dual widescreen wallpaper sized at 3840x1200. Enjoy the warmth...

Nothing comes to mind

Couldn't think of a title. It's a piece of wood, in the morning. Couldn't call it *that* now could I?

Modern Architecture

A little utilities routing in the Center for Advanced Energy Studies, Idaho Falls, ID. Somehow reminds me of Robert DeNiro in "Brazil."

Spring Weeds

It snowed today. Must be time to go back through my shots from spring I never processed and see if there's any wheat in all that chaff. I kinda liked these weeds... Wonder if Laura knows what they're called.

Death Canyon Panorama

This is a view of about 180 degrees of Death Canyon in Teton National Park, Wyoming. Taken from the Shelf near Meeks Pass.

Without clicking the image, all you can see is the left edge of the photo. Please click for the real picture! The full view size is 1200x5866 pixels -- wide enough for lotsa monitors, if you've got 'em! The working image size is twice as big (or 4x the area, if you're a nerd).

Calm Color

This aspen looked quite anemic standing in a grove of mountain ash. They are positively garish this time of year, even before the sun hits them. I kind of liked the monochrome/kodachrome effect.

Yet Another Silly Sunset

Everybody posts sunsets, don't they. Have to add my name to the list now. This one was an exercise with ND gradient filters that worked out pretty well. Exposure was pretty long, which accounts for the focus softness you might notice.

Furled

One of many Hostas in Mom's garden this spring. They look a little fleshy in monochrome-- not that there's anything wrong with that ;-)

Ice Jam: Dual Widescreen Wallpaper

Another shot formatted for dual widescreen monitor setups. This little icejam formed up every morning in the space between shore and the ice covering the rest of the lake. Taken in the White Cloud mountains last July.

Negative Space

A little negative space between a hellebore and a clump of grass.

Hellebore Jungle-- Dual Monitor Wallpaper

Update July 22: I didn't like the original exposure, so I've tweaked it just a bit. Enjoy!

False Hellebore shooting out of the ground this Fourth of July weekend. This is a dual monitor wallpaper sized at 3840x1200. It looks tiny here on the blog-- Click for a better view!

[ I haven't stopped shooting, for those of you wondering. Just haven't been processing. A slightly lower grade sin, I hope ;-) ]

Pterodactyls, 3

Just a snapshot to illustrate my earlier statements about pelicans. I must take a moment to point out that no birds were cut or pasted in the making of this photo... even though it looks like it, even to me. That's just what they do.

'Nough about birds for now-- guess it's time to move on.

Pterodactyls 2

Another pelican auditioning for a role in "Land of the Lost." I think he's got a shot.

Pterodactyls 1

Pelicans always make me think of the pterodactyls in old 'Calvin and Hobbes' strips. They look goofy enough they shouldn't be able to fly at all, yet they are remarkably agile in the air, and maniacs when diving into shallow water from great heights. I always love watching them fish. Here's a pair who just spotted some fish and are setting up for their dive.

Secret Path

A path leading up from the beach to the center of town. You can't find it from either the beach or the town-- someone has to show you. Very cool.

This post took forever to put together because the driver for my Intuos 4 tablet kept getting hijacked by Vista's Tablet PC driver, which is waaaay dumber. Finally found the problem ( so far, at any rate). Drop a line if you want to hear it.

Little Sun

I found a little sun to keep in my pocket for when the March skies are gray and lugubrious for days and days and days...

Path of Light

Inviting as it is (to me at least), it would be a tough path to walk. You'd get soggy shoes pretty quick.

Makin' Tracks

Somehow these footprints remind me of a Japanese-style breaking wave painting. You really have to squint, but it's in there ;-)

Watercolors: Dual Widescreen Wallpaper

Time for a new background on my work computer, so I'll try this: Predawn light on the Sea of Cortez. Download size, should you choose to click the image, is 3840 x 1200.

Here's my last Devil's Claw shot. Time to go back to color for a while.

Devil's Claw 3

Third in the series. One more (if I can figure out a little composition problem), then on to pterodactyls!

Devil's Claw 2

A different view of the same Devil's Claw seed pods. Slight jiggle and a change of angle, and all the symmetry goes away. Well, almost...

Devil's Claw 1

Devil's Claw seed pods found in the Mexican Desert. Nasty little beasties, if its you they're stuck to. But somehow I'm more reminded of Mastodons from "Strange Beasts of the Past" than I am of any devils I've ever seen drawn.
