Autumn Sky

2008 fading away to the far horizon. Goodbye and good riddance to a stupid year. Let's try again, shall we?

Wagons Ho!

Late fall shot of an old lumber wagon, I think. I love how the sun filtering through the trees gives the scene a studio light effect.

On a side note, one of the hazards of having a dog-based photo blog is that the old girl always gets in the way. She especially enjoys it when I get my nose down for a low angle shot. Easier to lick that way. Usually, I shoo her out of the way. Sometimes I just shoot her. Like here.

Whiskers

This is actually an early fall shot. This old fence post is probably 2 feet under snow by now.

Snowline

Snowline, Montana that is. Just before the snow lines up there got serious.

Liatrus

I went out and shot some today, but at editing time, was somehow more drawn to old stuff from the summer, when it was warm. Go figure...

Waiting for Spring

No matter how electric blue or blazing fast, I think we all feel a little sepia in the fall...

Losing Leaves

Either fall is coming, or maybe voles have eaten the roots. Or, maybe a bit of both.

An Incredible Smallness of Being

Say Hi to Warren Jones, enjoying a September walk in the Jedediah Smith National Wilderness. This shot was taken from near the top of Table Mountain, a popular yet rigorous walk. The rock in the background has been the subject of tens of thousands of pictures around here, and obviously needs no introduction. But just in case we have a reader from Mars, it's the Grand Teton.

For our Nebraska reader who misses the mountains and confesses to downloading photos for windows backgrounds, I've made the linked photo of high enough resolution for a single-screen monitor. Apparently Blogger won't let me give you the 3200x 2000 version. Something else I need to fix.

This is only a test

My sister asked me for a few changes to the page, and upon investigating, I find I'll have to fix a few other little nits. Today I added an archive at the bottom of the page, and found that the first whole sentence is being used by Blogger as the post title. Grrr... Hopefully I have that fixed now. You'll probably see a few other changes in format in the next week or so.

Break in the Weather

Shot from the highway on our way home tonight. Fall is definitely here. It's gonna get *cold*.

Hangin' by the pool

After playing with the pool furniture and almost falling in, our friend relaxes a bit...

Falling in the Pool

Well, this youngster didn't quite fall into the pool, but he and his brother were fun to watch on their big day out with Mom. He also hopped onto a floating pool chair and tried to poke a hole in it with his rather impressive talons and beak. We decided to chase him off at that point. The snapshot here is fun, but tough to turn into a photo. So I decided not to try (any longer).

Seems like an appropriate title, as that's what I've been this week. Back now, so hopefully the POTD will be closer to daily, and less weekly.

False Helibore

I Always think of M. E. Lacy's false helibore B&W photos when I see it in the woods,
So a tip of the hat and a "much obliged" to him.

Dawn at Granite

Just a snapshot from a nice weekend up Granite Creek. It's still Sunday, but I'm posting this for Monday, because somehow I seem to be awfully tired on Monday evenings ;-)

Life Is...

These are pie cherries-- sour enough to cramp up your whole face-- so if life were a bowl of these, you'd need a lot of sugar just to get by.

Snow Crack

It's August, it's hot, time to cool off. How about a little personality test? Personally, I only see snow.

Yourphobia

Well, not *your* phobia maybe, but mine certainly. I can never remember the names of plants, and I think those who keep reminding me must tire of repeating themselves again and again.
So, today we have Euphorbia, and tomorrow I can re-read this page and remember that small fact.

Where's PacMan?

Sorry I haven't posted since last Friday. Got hung up by the usual obligations (work). That will probably continue for a while, so please be patient.

Another shot from the Teton Pass fire. Doubt you'll find this "beautiful," but I found it... interesting.

Crowned

crown fire (crowning) -- The movement of fire through the crowns of trees or shrubs more or less independently of the surface fire. (by NOVA).

This is a tree in the Teton Pass area in West Central Montana devastated by fire last year. The fire was so hot that work crews on site are discovering that even the roots have burned. Obviously, in some places the top was even hotter than the bottom.

Seuss Tree

Sorry no posts for the last several days. If you know the actual name of this little fella (and the other flowers I post), post a comment and let me know and I'll include the flower name to enlighten the rest of us...

Blushing Bride

This reminds me of one of those cheesy soft focus, over-the-shoulder bridal photos (Though our subject was not very friendly-- more on spines later). I especially liked this shot because it's late, and it required zero photoshop time. This is what it looked like right out of the camera.

Iris 2

Laura's Iris were fantastic this spring. I shot a bunch, so you'll probably be subjected to a lot of flower shots for awhile.

Back to summertime...
I'm experimenting with larger photo uploads. Let me know if this is useful-- Could play around with dual monitor sized stuff, if there's an interest.

Fencing Memory

Shot last fall. This spot is all cleaned up now to make way for a new subdivision.
Ahhh, sweet progress.
