Hooks and Loops

Thinking about the desert today.  The edges of these Yucca peel off making all kinds of curlicues I liked.  From Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico.

November Sunset

Just a reminder that not all sunsets are warm, or rosy, or particularly inviting.  Especially in the North, in November.  This one has "November" written all over it.  Think I'll go make a cup of cocoa...

If you'd like to see the high resolution video, I've attempted to upload it to youtube here.

Worth Getting Up

A little early morning paddling last summer.  I just love how dark and cold transforms itself into color and warmth on summer mornings.  Definitely worth getting up for.

Glow

The kind of flowers vampires might enjoy.  Consider this a testament to my procrastination skills (being a day late for vampires and all).

Bell Before Dawn

The bell-shaped mountain on the right is Bell Mountain.  But not why you think-- According to SummitPost.org, it was named after Robert Bell, Idaho's first state mining inspector.  Color and texture credit to the vast quantities of smoke from several fires in the central part of the state.

Green Light: Dual Widescreen Wallpaper

Hostas.  I always shoot way too many photos of them because I like their bright electric veins so much.  Here's a little bit of an experimental treatment.

Prehistoric

A living fossil (well, not living anymore, but he was this week) in my back yard.  How many millions of years did these bugs have to buzz around waiting for us to finally grace the evolutionary stage?  Do you suppose their lives were the lesser for our absence?

Halo Flower

So perfect a sunflower that it has a halo?  Or perhaps under aerial attack by Luna moths...  Or tiny UFO's.  Yeah, that's the ticket!  UFO's!

Fishing Dinwoody Creek (Dual Widescreen Wallpaper)

Mike Hart looking for a fish in Dinwoody creek after our descent from base camp at the foot of Gannett Peak  (the big one in the back).  Thick thick water with rock flour from the Gannett, Gooseneck, and Dinwoody Glaciers, so no wonder there weren't any fish.

Download size is 3840x1280.  Original is 8600x2875--maybe I could squeeze a 5x7 out of that?

Edit 8/23/12:  Forgot blogspot won't let you download photos at full res.  Gettin' foggy in my dotage, I guess.  Anyway, linked the download to deviantART so you can see it at my advertised resolution.
Cheerio--

The Waterfall at Bomber Basin

Hiking South along the Glacier Trail in the Wind River Range, you come pretty quickly to Bomber Basin.  This little falls isn't visible from the trail, but is certainly worth a little rest break.  I'll always remember it as the place I lost my sunglasses...

Nude Z

Brand new to the whole automotive photography thing, so I can definitely see areas for improvement.  With any luck you'll see them (the improvements) forthcoming.

Oh yeah.  "Nude" because she's bone stock.  Just think of the possibilities...

Summer Storm

Summer storm running across Idaho wheat fields, early July.  I shot a time lapse of this one, and hopefully will be able to post it in motion in a bit.  Let me know if you're interested.

A few more green tones than my last post, eh?

Bad, Bad Weather

Believe it or not, these clouds were right over my house!  Seriously!  (Though I might have played with contrast and color balance just a wee bit ;-)

3840x1200 if you were looking for a threatening background wallpaper.

Sticks and Stones: Dual Widescreen Wallpaper

A new wallpaper with a little darker theme than usual.  Somehow the shadows of the beams on the wall make me think of old vampire movies--maybe I should have named it *Stakes* and Stones...

The Mountain Photographer's Lament

We, as photographers, are required by our genetic code to take photos of mountains.  Primal imperative and all that.  But the derned things are **so** shy.  For instance, we have here the triplet of Owens, and the Grand and Middle Tetons, along with me on top of the Muffin freezing my butt off with a camera.  In the twenty or so minutes I was up there, the top of the Grand showed for just one frame.  Can you see it?  No wonder we drink so much!

Forest Fire

No real fire-- the snow at elevation was still 5-8 ft. deep.    Just mountain weather trying to keep us guessing on an early (June 1) snow hike up to Table Rock.  Thankfully, this was about as serious as it got.  Hopefully a few more shots from the day will be forthcoming.

Hey, May!

This little gal is looking around wondering what the heck happened to May.  My last post, just a few days ago (or so it felt) turns out to have been a whole month ago.  Our subject today is a lovely marsh-grass textured bokeh, or perhaps a mama tree swallow.  I haven't decided.

New Adventures in Time (Lapse)

I've been playing around with time lapse techniques lately.  This is the first result that is remotely interesting and fits on the interwebs.  Be patient, it's kinda big and will take a while to load.

Holes 2: Out of the Heat

Such a spot would be inviting come mid-August.  I'm intrigued by all the extra holes-- windows?  chimneys?  so ignorant...

Kitchen Door

Still at Bandolier N.M. here.  This is in one of the cave dwellings in the cliffs.  I really have no idea if this was a kitchen, bedroom, or stock pen-- We forgot to pick up the explanatory brochure.  The bluish floor is good ol' modern concrete the Park Service put down to protect the floor from us visitors.

April Showers

Apricot Blossoms in the orchard.  They popped out early this year, and man did they pay for it.  Every kind of weather except warm.

Spring Means Graduation

It's almost Graduation Time already!  Aaagh!  I'm not ready!  No, wait, maybe I'm ready... Maybe I'll just be bipolar on the whole graduate thing for a while.  Isn't she pretty, tho?

If you're one of the people who'd want an 8x10 of this shot, it's printed and almost in the mail for you.  Patience.

Stormy -- Dual Widescreen Wallpaper

Time for another wallpaper today. This one's been dawdling in my outbox for quite some time now, waiting for the right time, I guess. Must be the right time today.

If you download, please drop a comment. Just so I can tell if anybody is using these. Thanks!

Bubble Burster

My lovely model is popping balloons we've covered with corn starch, and making a terrible mess of the basement. We had a blast! (so to speak) It is quite difficult to pose, smile, and look at the camera with an explosion happening next to your ear. She did a great job, don't you think?

Studies in Fluid Dynamics 3

Maybe not "Art" but I love this shot. Notice the touchdown of the the fluid onto the glass surface. Looks just the same as high speed bullets hitting hard stuff. Even down to the petalling of the radial splash. Similitude works! So Cool!

Geek off. (sorry)

More playing around with water and a wine glass. For some reason I find this endlessly fascinating. More to come...

Have a Drink on Me!

I worked in the "studio" today playing with lights and screens and wine glasses. For one thing, it sure makes me want a real studio with some head room. For another thing it makes a fella thirsty, all that work. And this shot looks an awful lot like a good whiskey, not that I'd waste it that way. But now that I'm done I've got an idea. mmmm....

Boiled Ice

Larry pointed out that the experiment with the new photo site was a flop. So here's another try, doing things the tried and true way.

Here's a little bit of an alien landscape I like. Trying a new picture file storage location at ACDSeeOnline. Let me know if this loads slower or less reliably than before.

Face Off

Ice and Rock face off over the creek getting ready for a long winter.

I shot this way back in October, thus the 2011 marking. Been having a horrible time getting the color balance right, for some reason. Still not right, but I'm posting it anyway.
