crown fire (crowning) -- The movement of fire through the crowns of trees or shrubs more or less independently of the surface fire. (by NOVA).This is a tree in the Teton Pass area in West Central Montana devastated by fire last year. The fire was so hot that work crews on site are discovering that even the roots have burned. Obviously, in some places the top was even hotter than the bottom.
